iDQI: A Collaborative Approach to Diabetes Quality
iDQI strives to embrace the diverse perspectives of individuals, clinicians, and policy experts at the leadership level to continue to realize our mission of improving the quality of care offered to people with diabetes (PWD). The iDQI is managed by Avalere Health in conjunction with the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) and Beyond Type 1 (BT1), with support from Abbott Diabetes Care and Dexcom. We provide a brief description for our partners BT1 and ADCES below.
  • Association for Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES): is a multidisciplinary membership organization with approximately 12,000 members dedicated to empowering diabetes care and education specialists to expand the possibilities of innovative education, management, and support. ADCES’s vision for the specialty of diabetes care and education specialists is a commitment to embrace technology and data interpretation to ensure quality care and education for PWD and the diabetes care team.
  •  Beyond Type 1 (BT1): is a global non-profit dedicated to the diabetes community. With two million members strong, BT1 serves the largest digital audience of any diabetes non-profit, and its mission is to help people living with diabetes to survive and thrive. BT1 is uniting the global diabetes community, having launched websites in French, German, and Spanish, among others; provides peer-to-peer support for 62,000 people through community apps; was awarded a record-breaking $166K through its Diabetes Scholars initiative; and launched a global diabetes warning sign campaign, #SeeTheSigns, which reached 150 million viewers on social media alone. The campaign has captured the attention of celebrities like Billy Porter and Jennifer Garner and patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes from 20 countries around the globe.

Development of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Quality Measures
iDQI intends to shift the diabetes quality paradigm to reflect innovations and technological advances that account for patient preferences. iDQI is employing a multi-pronged approach involving real-world evidence generation, dialogue sessions, and research. As an initial phase of work, iDQI is in the process of creating a set of 3 CGM-related quality measures to advance the quality of diabetes care. Details of each measure can be viewed in the graphic below:

Testing the Feasibility of 3 CGM Measures
iDQI has partnered with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC to conduct a pilot study to assess the feasibility of 3 CGM-related quality measures. Katherine O’Neal, PharmD, MBA, and Hayley Sewell, PharmD, are the co-principal investigators and Avalere oversees study execution on behalf of iDQI. This mixed-methods pilot study is designed to test the feasibility of the CGM measure set and to understand the ability of electronic data sources (e.g., EHRs) used in ambulatory care to capture the required data elements to report on the measures. A secondary objective is to understand standards of care related to CGM. At the conclusion of the study, the iDQI will reconvene the technical expert panel to consider revisions to the measure specifications, if needed, prior to beta testing.
