SPOTLIGHT: DIETITIANS ACROSS THE US CELEBRATE NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH

This March, we celebrate National Nutrition Month—and especially Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day—in recognition of the important role dietitians play to help people make informed food choices and develop healthful eating and physical activity habits.
  • This year’s theme is “Celebrate a World of Flavors,” showcasing the countless ways in which flavors and cultures from around the world help people create healthy habits that spotlight their heritage and introduce them to new foods and flavors
  • You can view this video from the Academy’s president
  • Access more resources—such as key messaging for each week, toolkits, and event ideas—on the Academy’s website
We would love to hear about the ways in which you are celebrating nutrition and your team of dietitians.

NUTRITION POLICY UPDATES

USPSTF Research Plan Comment Opportunity

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) posted its draft research plan for Preventive Services for Food Insecurity, which is now open to public comment through March 23. Learning Collaborative members may be interested in commenting on this research plan about a topic so closely related to malnutrition.

USPSTF is an independent organization that makes evidence-based clinical recommendations on preventive services. USPSTF reports annually to Congress about gaps in the evidence base and its recommendations can inform coverage decisions by payers and policymakers (e.g., private insurance plans must cover recommended preventive services without patient cost-sharing).
NUTRITION RESEARCH

Recent Publications

Several publications and blogs focused on malnutrition have recently been published and those relevant to the nutrition care process and quality improvement have been added to the Malnutrition Evidence Library on our website:
NIH Funding Opportunity

The NIH recently released a funding opportunity titled, “Evaluating the Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic-related Food and Housing Policies and Programs on Health Outcomes in Health Disparity Populations.” The NIH is seeking applications outlining a natural experiment approach to evaluating how various COVID-19-related food and housing policies that addressed food/nutrition security and housing security affected health—particularly in health disparity populations. We encourage you to review the opportunity and submission criteria if this is related to your quality improvement projects and institution's goals.
NUTRITION IN THE NEWS

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) announced its new report, published in collaboration with the AARP Foundation. It highlights perceptions of the importance of temporary increases to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during COVID-19 based on 25 interviews with older adults. Interviewees noted that increased SNAP benefits enabled them to eat balanced and nutritious meals and freed up money for essential bills and expenses (among other positive impacts).
