Spotlight: MQii Events at FNCE 2019

Engage with MQii Learning Collaborative Colleagues at FNCE!

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ annual Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) will be held in Philadelphia, PA, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from October 25–28, and will once again prominently feature MQii (and other key malnutrition topics) throughout the event. We invite you to hear more about the work that MQii sites are doing and engage with other MQii Learning Collaborative members. Below are details about our opportunities to highlight success stories from members who have used their nutrition expertise and leadership skills to improve the quality of malnutrition care for patients in their facilities:

  • MQii Videos at FNCE: The Opening and Closing Sessions will each feature a video highlighting the care and leadership teams from 3 of our MQii Learning Collaborative member sites. You can watch last year’s video for reference as we anticipate this year’s videos describing the success of malnutrition quality improvement projects in improving patient satisfaction, rates of physicians’ malnutrition diagnoses, and more.
  • MQii Symposium: “Dietitians Driving Impact: Data on Improved Patient Care from the Malnutrition Quality Improvement Initiative”: On Sunday, October 27, at 1:30 PM in room 121-ABC, 2 MQii Learning Collaborative leaders—Angela Lago, MS, RDN, LDN, CNSC (along with Executive Vice President Philip Brown Jr., MD), from New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Rajesh Kumari, DSc, RD, from Overlook Medical Center—will participate in a panel moderated by Wendy Phillips, MS, RD, CNSC, CLE, FAND, from Morrison Healthcare. They will discuss how implementing malnutrition quality improvement projects and the malnutrition electronic quality measures (eCQMs) have enabled them to capture key nutrition care, diagnosis, and intervention data and outcomes that matter to patients, physicians, nurses, and administrators in the hospital and post-discharge. You can view more details in the FNCE program

Please let us know if you are planning to attend FNCE 2019 so we can connect in-person and provide you with additional details on MQii-focused events. Please also let us know if you will be presenting any malnutrition-focused work at FNCE (poster, panel session, or otherwise) so we can share it with your MQii Learning Collaborative colleagues. We hope to see you there!

Malnutrition in the News

Promoting Access to Nutritious Food is Critical for the Health of America’s Elderly

Earlier this month, Kaiser Health News published an article about the concurrent problems of malnutrition and food insecurity among aging Americans. While the country’s population ages and food insecurity among senior citizens is about 8 percent and increasing, funding for senior meal programs has fallen for the past 15 years. This article also cites a recent report from the Bipartisan Policy Center that showed for every dollar spent on meal delivery for chronically ill seniors after hospital discharge, Medicare could save $1.57. The wide publicity of these articles speaks to the growing interest in and importance of the quality improvement initiatives and data dissemination work that you are all leading. We hope to all make a positive impact on these pressing public health crises.

LEARNING COLLABORATIVE PARTICIPANT RESOURCES

NFPE “Tip of the Month”

recent study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (JAND) showed that malnourished patients who received oral nutrition supplements (ONS) had fewer 30-day readmissions, especially in the oncology population, and shorter length of stay (LOS) when ONS were initiated closer to admission. This not only emphasizes the importance of nutrition intervention, but also the role of the dietitian to first identify the patient with malnutrition utilizing the malnutrition clinical characteristics (MCC).

Malnutrition clinical characteristics are thoroughly discussed during the Academy’s Nutrition Focused Physical Exam (NFPE) Hands-on Training Workshop, which provides the RDN with the skills to perform an NFPE as part of a complete nutrition assessment to aid in identifying malnutrition. Visit www.eatrightpro.org/nfpe to see if there is an NFPE Workshop near you.
